Moving from WordPress to Blogger may sound technical but don’t worry — we’ll walk you through every step. Here’s how to do it the right way without losing your content or your mind.
1. Export Your WordPress Content
First you need to grab all your existing content from WordPress:
- Log into your WordPress dashboard
- Go to Tools > Export
- Choose All Content — this includes your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories and tags
- Click Download Export File — you’ll get a .xml file on your computer
This file is important — it has everything you’ve created on WordPress so far.
2. Convert WordPress XML to Blogger Format
Here’s where the magic happens. WordPress exports your content in a format called WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS) but Blogger can’t read it as is. You need to convert it into a format that Blogger understands.
To do this:
- Go to a free online tool like WordPress to Blogger
- Upload the .xml file you just exported
- The tool will convert it and give you a Blogger-compatible .xml file to download
This new file is ready to be imported into Blogger.
3. Import into Blogger
Once you have the converted file:
- Log into your Blogger account
- Go to your Blogger dashboard
- Click Settings > Import Content
- Upload the converted .xml file
- (Optional) Check the box to import only published posts — this skips drafts and private content if you want a cleaner blog
- Click Import, and your WordPress posts will show up in your Blogger blog!
4. Fix Formatting & Media Manually
After import, things won’t be perfect. Expect to spend a bit of time cleaning up:
- Images and media don’t transfer — you’ll need to re-upload them manually or host them elsewhere (like Google Drive or Imgur)
- Post formatting will be a little off — line breaks, headings, and styling will need to be adjusted
- Categories and tags from WordPress won’t become Blogger labels — you’ll need to recreate them
- Check internal links — especially if they point to WordPress URLs
This will take some time, but it’ll make your blog look good and work smoothly.
5. (Optional) Custom Domain
If you had a custom domain on WordPress like www.myblog.com, you can use it on Blogger. Doing so:
- Keeps your brand and identity
- Saves your search engine rankings and backlinks
- Looks more professional
Just update your domain’s DNS and link it in Blogger settings.
